Who’s behind the wheel in your life?

Is it the version of you who’s ready to hit the gas and ride off into the sunset?

Or is it the version who prefers to play it safe, and keep one foot on the brake?

For a lot of us, it tends to be the second one. This means our hearts aren’t running the show – our fear is. And that overwhelming, gut-twisting worry is what keeps so many people from going after what they really want in life.

So how do we break free?

Holly, this week’s asker extraordinaire, has the same question.

“Vasavi, I love watching your videos. Every time I’m stuck on a certain area of my life, you seem to send me just the right video of the week. Ok, so I have a lot of fear. I just want to kill it off. It stops me in every area of my life. I can’t date, I can’t take risks… I really want to start my own business, and every time I even think of doing it, I get overcome by so much fear, and I’m paralyzed. How do I get rid of my fear?”

Let me give you the bad news first: you’re never going to get rid of your fear. Ever.

But the good news is, that’s ok. What’s really important is what happens when something makes you feel afraid.

As author Meg Cabot wrote so beautifully: “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear. The brave may not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all.”

There was a time when I didn’t believe in myself. I compared myself to everyone around me (with devastating results). I didn’t feel supported by the people I was with. My self-confidence was pretty much nill, and I found myself stuck in a rut I wasn’t sure I could get out of. Have you ever felt that way? I used to allow other people’s opinions of me to dominate my life. In fact, I allowed it to dominate me so much so that I had no idea who I was. It was the “not knowing” who I was that fueled me to be who I am today.

In my last Keepin’ It Real video, I spoke about “how to be you.” How to be YOU, free from societal conditioning and following the status quo. I’m taking about breaking all the rules and forgetting about everything you have been trained (and brainwashed) to believe is “right.”

Let me keep it real with you. My fuel wasn’t always what it is today. My fuel used to be:

  • always being right
  • comparing myself to others
  • being “better” because I believed I wasn’t good enough
  • being inauthentic in all my relationships because I wanted to be loved and accepted

My fuel TODAY can be summed up in six words.

When I read this quote in Karen Salmonsohn’s INSTANT HAPPY book it hit me like a ton of breaks.

I had been using  the anger, resentment, shame, and blame to keep me small and stuck. There had to be another way out. And then I got it. I got what I needed to do and who I needed to BE on cellular level. Being AWESOME would be my fuel. Being AWESOME was the permission slip I was waiting for.

Today, being fueled by AWESOME is:

  • the greatest gift I can give to others
  • my birthright
  • my essence
  • my choice

I can’t help but to think about what would have happened if I chose anger, resentment, shame, and blame as my fuel. It’s a daily reminder that I have a choice in each and every moment to be my highest and best self. I chose to make a course correction in my life. I have many accomplishments but the one that I am most proud of is the choice and commitment that I have made to be AWESOME.

You were born to be awesome. It’s time. The world needs you.
