Does anger control you?

Emotions are extremely powerful. They have the ability to impair our judgement, cloud our mind, and make us do things that we would never normally do. What if you were able to feel your emotions, but still have complete control of them? I know it sounds too good to be true, but let’s do some investigating.

We are going to look at one of the most powerful and potentially dangerous emotions.

What happens when you get angry?

Do you scream?

Throw things?

Say hurtful words?

All of the above?

Anger is a natural emotion. Every single person on this planet has felt anger at one time or another. Everyone reacts differently. Some may even turn to drugs and alcohol to stuff that emotion deep down inside of them so as to not feel the intensity of it. It holds so much power over many people and they don’t even realize it.

A perfect example is road rage. When someone cuts you off in traffic and you start cursing at them in your car, you just let that person’s actions have power over you. You also may speed up and try to cut them off to get revenge while possibly putting yourself or others in danger.

Is this rational?

Hell no it’s not.

Number one, they cannot even hear you, so why are you wasting your energy calling them unspeakable things?

Number two, you just lowered yourself trying to get revenge and could have gotten seriously hurt.

Let’s look at this situation free of any emotion whatsoever.

This person cut you off in traffic. Whether or not it was intentional is besides the point. That triggered something inside of you that had nothing to do with this person cutting you off. It is much deeper than that. You saw this person as someone trying to screw you over. Plain and simple. Maybe you have been wronged in the past and now it is surfacing in five o’clock traffic on the interstate in your car.

The point is, you are letting past events, dictate how you react to certain current events and it is affecting you more than you know.

Some people’s entire day could be ruined because one little thing like this sets you off and you literally let it consume your brain.

It could be your boss at work telling you that you did something wrong when you have been busting your ass all day.

Your girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife says something that triggers you.

Your kid does something that you have told them a thousand times not to do.

Always try to get to the root of why something upset you. It’s usually never about the actual event that is currently happening. It usually ties to something in your past, or your childhood that is now surfacing with some (not so) random event.

It could literally be anything.

This is why it is very important to recognize when your anger surfaces. Don’t let outside influences have so much power over how you react. You are literally wasting your energy, raising your blood pressure, and stressing yourself over an event that is completely out of your control.

You can’t control anyone except yourself.

So let’s work on that.

The easiest way in my opinion is when you get angry, realize that you are letting something outside of you have power over you. It is actually unhealthy, and ages you quicker because your blood pressure is raised, which basically means it’s putting stress on your body for no reason whatsoever.

I don’t think anyone likes that idea.

Next time your anger surfaces, notice it, feel it, don’t let it manifest in crazy actions, take a few deep breaths, understand why you’re angry, and then simply move on with your day. Life is too short to stay mad.

I know I’m making it sound very simple. It’s taken me YEARS to get my hot temper under control.

And do I still slip? OF COURSE.

This takes massive discipline and practice. It won’t happen overnight. Don’t give up. Keep at it. You’ll learn something new about yourself every single day in the process. You’ll grow as a person.

Or stay angry at the world.

Your choice.

It’s easy to not recognize our own uniqueness or “specialness.”

I want to give you simple and actionable steps that you can take for the week ahead for you to get a handle on your anger and uncover your true “specialness.”

I want you to be able to tell yourself every single day #imsospecial because…

This week, schedule in time in your calendar to really become aware of the triggers that anger you. Many times, the gap between our trigger and reaction is so small that we don’t even realize when our anger our frustration takes over.

Slowing down helps. I’ve recorded a free “Emotional Freedom” meditation that will guide you through slowing down, checking in with your body, and start paying attention to what’s going on IN your body (as opposed to your mind which can play tricks on you).
