What if this is as good as it gets?

The Dark Side.

This at first glance, may seem like a Star Wars reference. If you haven’t seen Star Wars and don’t know what I’m talking about, then shame on you (kidding, I’ve never seen it myself).  

We all have this side to ourselves. The part that we don’t normally want to look at. The part that we don’t tell people about. It’s not pretty I’ll give you that. It definitely should not be allowed to play and frolic on a regular basis.

Guess what?

It’s still you. 

What if I told you that this also could be your greatest asset?

I know this does not sound very realistic, but really give it some thought. If and I mean IF you were truly able to accept this part of yourself along with all the wonderful, amazing, rainbow unicorn parts, there would be nothing left to judge.


You would no longer have those painful thoughts of you making those horrible decisions in college. Or that time you decided to steal something, lie, cheat, manipulate, or con somebody.

Every “bad” decision you have made is an opportunity to learn something about yourself in the process. Not judge yourself for all the horrible unspeakable things you have done in your life.

Leave the past in the past. That’s where it belongs.

Or let it define you as a person, because we all know that’s a great option.

There are also some dark parts of us that exist in the present as well. The part of you that may hate something about yourself. Such as your body, hair, your lack of confidence when speaking in front of a group, literally it could be anything. I could sit here and list examples all day, but at the end of the day, you know which part of yourself I’m referring to.

Either way, at some point you are going to have to learn to accept yourself. Not just the part of you that is a great student, and has a Masters degree from an Ivy League college (speaking from personal experience).

I’m talking about the other part. The part of you that maybe lied to your mother after you stole money out of her purse to buy something you probably shouldn’t have been buying in the first place when you were 12 years old. 

This is just an extreme example.  

It could be any part of you that you don’t like. The part of you that you are constantly talking shit to.  

Instead try being kind to that part of yourself. You aren’t letting yourself off the hook, but this solves the problem of being in a constant mental battle between good and evil.  

You won’t be constantly beating yourself up all the time.

It’s OK. You don’t have to admit your shortcomings to anyone but yourself if you don’t want to. I’m not saying you need to shout it out from the rooftops. Therapy does help a lot of people though. Talking to someone that is indifferent and maybe could offer some advice that would help you. This prevents you from bottling up inside usually resulting in self-hatred.  

Anyway, my whole message here is self-acceptance. It doesn’t need to be some depressing, long drawn out process.  

You are who you are.

It is what it is.

One event, or characteristic is not able to define you. Deep down in your core, you know who you are. Don’t let your shadow define you.

You define yourself.

Once you are able to realize this, you are able to go through life, completely unshakeable. You’ll be less insecure. No one will be able to tell you something you haven’t already said to yourself. When others doubt you, you won’t doubt yourself. If you make a mistake you won’t blame yourself so hard. You’re able to accept it. Learn from it. Move on from it.

Or you can let that evil voice inside have you under a spell.  Be ruled by thoughts that aren’t even real.

Or go through life hating yourself.

The choice is yours. It always has been.
