Have you ever heard that song The Motto by Drake? This is where he coined one of the most used terms by our youth in today’s society. YOLO. You only live once.
Some people just use this an excuse to party everyday, go out drinking, use drugs, and spend all their hard earned money and basically have nothing to show for it.
What if we can look at YOLO and extract a deeper meaning? I know this sounds crazy because let’s be real it’s a song by Drake, but I think he could really be onto something here.
What if YOLO meant instead of the party life, living up to your fullest potential. Not caring what others think about you. No, like actually not caring about what others think. Or as Drake would say “fuck what anybody say.” I am aware this is not correct grammar for all you English professors, but he has a point.
I mean who really wants to wake up everyday at 7, shower, brush their teeth, get dressed, sit in traffic to go to that job you hate, collect a paycheck, and spend that paycheck on stuff to make people like you.
What if instead of doing that, you gave yourself an opportunity to do the one thing you love every single day for the rest of your life? Oh, and you also got paid a shitload of money to do that? Doesn’t that sound so amazing?
I thought so.
Everyone is capable of doing this. Everyone. You may not think so but you are. You may start off small at first, but do you think Michael Jordan started off ballin’ out of control and won NBA championships out of the gate?
No. It took hard work and dedication.
The difference between you and Michael Jordan is that he was doing something he absolutely 100% loved doing every single day. If circumstances were different and Michael Jordan never became a pro basketball player he probably would have still played basketball in his spare time. That was his passion, not his job. See the difference?
The goal here is to make your passion into your job if possible.
Not the other way around.
Most people try to do this backwards. They find something that they are mildly interested in, go to school, get a degree, and pursue a career in that field. Then over the years they try to pretend that it’s in fact their passion so they don’t go home at night and shoot themselves.
If you have one thing, that you have been truly passionate about your whole life and you make time to do it everyday, the money will come eventually. It might be small at first, but it will grow slowly. That’s just how the world works. Someone will notice your passion and want to PAY you for it. After you do something long enough and put enough love and effort into it, you are going to be skilled at it.
I’m sure you all have heard the saying:
“Find something you love doing and you’ll never work another day in your life.”
Even though this statement is corny and overused, you will truly understand it once you find that one thing you love doing. You will say to yourself “Ohhhhhh, this is what they were talking about.” It will feel effortless. Fun.
It doesn’t matter if anyone else thinks you should or shouldn’t be doing it.
Do they pay your bills? No.
So tell them to stop worrying about how you’re going to make your money and live your life.
Do it for you.
Life is short.
Unpredictable. You don’t want to lay on your deathbed and be like “Man I really wish…” Fill in the blank.
Don’t spend your life wishing. Spend your life doing. (click to tweet)
This isn’t permission to go out and quit your job. We all need money to survive. Just realize your job is your job and don’t kid yourself. Just make sure when you get home, you make time for that special passion. Whatever it may be.
That is what we are trying to achieve here.
You only live once.
Take advantage of that. Make sure you spend each day doing something you want to do and not only something you need to do. Use everyday as if it was your last (not to sound morbid and once again not an excuse to go out and party like it’s 1999).
Do what you want to do.
So next time you hear some “dumb kid” say YOLO, or hear it on the radio, you can be reminded of me, and be reminded to pursue your passion.
You never know what tomorrow may bring.
It’s easy to not recognize our own uniqueness or “specialness.” I want to give you simple and actionable steps that you can take for the week ahead for you to pursue your passion and uncover your true “specialness.”
This week, schedule in time in your calendar to “wander and daydream.” I do this every week. Use this time to do something you have been meaning to get around to. Use this time to write down things you loved doing as a kid. Or use this time to just have some fun and shake things up. Either way. Do something different this week that will help you get closer to YOU.
Once you have decided on which action step to take and have taken it, feel free to post below and let me know what’s up. I can’t wait to hear more.
If you don’t know what your passion is or what you’re good at, THIS is what I’m a beast at. Hop on the phone with me and let’s figure it out together. I know it’s in you.
