keepin’ it real: why aren’t you getting your workout in?

It’s a fact: work takes its toll on your body.

Hours spent sitting behind a desk, staring at a screen (and possibly snacking) starts to feel pretty awful after a while. Exercise is hugely important, because it allows us to do something that’s amazing for our bodies on every level.

Although we have every reason to lace up our sneakers and get moving, we don’t. Why? Well, let’s discuss.


This week’s question comes from Sam, who asks “I know I need to work out, but I keep putting my work ahead of me, and I just can’t seem to get in movement and start exercising. Any tips on how to get started?”

What are your excuses?

Do you tell yourself your work, family, or financial life is too busy to possibly schedule in some gym time? Five months ago, I was exactly where you are. Since then, I’ve figured out three easy steps for pulling yourself out of a health rut and ditching the excuses for good:

  1. Be real with yourself. How bullet-proof are your reasons for not exercising? Chances are, they won’t hold up to scrutiny very long.
  2. Do something fun! Working out doesn’t have to be a painful or stressful process. I absolutely adore my Crossfit class… but some days I can’t make it. So I have a great time taking my dog Laney on an extra-long walk in the sunshine.
  3. Get an accountability buddy. I know you’ve heard this one a thousand times, but it’s absolutely true. When you have someone around to ask where you’ve been, or why you haven’t shown up to class, it motivates you to go!
